Help two silly little questions about my Nexus 7

Sometimes I use my N7 one day and then don't use it again for a few days, so when I'm done using it for the day I power it down. When I turn it on again I sometimes have to hold down the power button for more than 10 seconds before "Google" appears on the screen letting me know the N7 is powering up. Is this normal? The N7 Guidebook says to "press the Power button on the right edge near the top for a few seconds, then release it" but doesn't give any indication of what constitutes "a few seconds."

Also, if I've powered down my N7 and plug in the charger, it doesn't always show the charging indicator on the screen. If I turn it back on, plug in the charger while it's on, and then turn it off, it will show me the charging indicator. I've only ever used the OEM charger that came with my N7. could there be a problem?

If my N7 is off, I just hold the power button for about 2 seconds and let go. You don't have to hold the button until you see the startup symbol.

I guess 5-6 seconds still counts as a few seconds. I don't think you have a problem. Some N7's may just startup quicker. As to the charging indicator, if I plug it in while off it takes 'a few seconds' for the screen charging icon to come on, but it turns off after about 15 more seconds. A quick touch of the power button will toggle the charging icon on, but it turns itself off (the icon) after a short time. With different builds of the N7 there is probably some variance in this behavior.

Is it bad if I press and hold the power button until the screen says "Google" to indicate that the N7 is powering up? Otherwise it's just by guess and by golly which is kind of irritating.

I've noticed on mine that I press the power button for about 2 seconds then let go, then after about 5-10 seconds of nothing happening I get the google logo and it starts to power up.....

If I plug in the charger with the power off, the only way I see if it is charging is a quick press on the power button, not the 2 seconds that will power it up, just long enough as if I were waking it from sleep.

No, I don't think that is bad. Don't overthink it. If you have figured out it takes an 8 second press (for example) to turn on just do that and don't worry about it. There are a lot worse things for which to be irritated.

This normal - unfortunately. You would think that they could have implemented at least a little control light like on every camera that shows you when the battery is fully charged.

Holding the power button for 10 seconds does a hard reset to the device (its equivalent to the little reset button on many electronics or holding the power button on your computer). Since the N7 doesn't have a traditional removable battery, that's how you reset it if it freezes and you can't restart it through the on screen menu. Holding the power button will restart the tablet...no matter what.

I would say it not waking up is normal in the sense that it happens to many people. I wouldn't say that it should happen, but it does, and doesn't seem to affect it in any serious regard.

My guess is that Android froze in some fashion that won't let it wake up or there's a weird driver issue.

As stated by the OP, the time frame between uses it's only a few days.

I would suggest not turning it off and just put it in sleep/standby mode, this way device turns on immediately after pressing the power button. I never turn off my Nexus 7 (sometimes a week or even more passes between uses) and when I use it again there is plenty of battery left on the device.

Supposedly the 16 and 32gb models have a snappier start up time among other things in comparison to the 8gb model. Do you have the 8gb model?
