Uber and Lyft exit Austin, TX after city passes law requiring drivers to be fingerprinted

Uber and Lyft today announced that they will be leaving Austin, Texas after the city passed a vote that hurts their businesses. The city ordinance requires that drivers of ride-hailing services be fingerprinted.

Uber and Lyft's ability to quickly expand relied on a quick and painless process of background checks done in partnership with local agencies. The companies, in their efforts to get voters to block the movement, explained that requiring fingerprint registration adds too much time to the hiring process.

That said, the residents of Austin are more worried about their safety, and they believe this rule will make it easier to screen employees who may be criminals.
