Uk Google voice search voice is terrible

Just updated to jellybean and the UK text-to-speech voice in Google Now is really terrible.

I've gone into settings and chosen the language to be US english think that would get me the voice as demonstrated at Google IO but it didn't work. Anyone know how to go about changing this?

Have you downloaded the additional speech recognition files? If not you need to go to settings > voice > download offline speech recognition > all and then choose English (UK) - done. There is a caveat though, this whole speech recognition and reading back results only work for a limited number of items at present. Currently, if I activiate Google Now and ask "what is the weather like in Birmingham" I'll receive the spoken answer and the card will pop-up. The other cards etc. I have not been able to try or verify. In most instances you get the Google search results page in the browser.

I've found it pretty good so far. Had the traffic and weather cards so far. Seems to respond well to voice input do far.
I'm using UK specific settings and it seemed to be working OK before I downloaded the offline UK voice files.

I've downloaded all the sound files and installed them. My original point was the voice they use to give the UK results is just bad. Very unreal, unlike the american voice.

Has no one in the uk found out how to change from one to other? It seems like it should be possible (see the method described in one of the comments above) but it seems to not be.
