UK Yahoo Mail Push Notifications

DMFX

Lurker
I am currently an iphone user and would like to move over to an android phone as the network service is terrible on the iphone, but I had a question about push notifications from Yahoo Mail.

I have setup my iphone so that it uses push and as soon as an email is received from my yahoo uk email account I receive a notification. I have been looking into whether android can do the same and it seems it can't as far as I can make out, which I find quite amazing!

Hopefully I am wrong and someone can explain how to receive push notifications from my yahoo account.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yahoo Mail has it's own app. Push works great on it. I have had it for about 4 months and it has worked fine until the last update a few days ago and it refuses to show new emails. I'm hoping they will get a fix soon.

It is not the fastest app in the world, but if instant notification of your yahoo mail is important it will work.

Thanks for the reply PaJean. Is the app that you are talking about just called Yahoo Mail and when you say you get instant notification you mean that you don't have to set the app to 'Fetch' emails every 15 minutes or so, you receive on your mobile as soon as it is sent?

I have Yahoo Mail by Yahoo. There aren't choices about how often it checks, so I assume it is push. I haven't had any problems with it, and recommend it.

Thanks David. I have managed to check the Yahoo app using a friends phone and you are right it is instant, however it is only instant when the phone is in use. If you are are on standby (with a black screen) you don't get the notification until you unlock the phone.

Does anyone know a way around this?

Does anyone know if the gmail version gives push alerts on the phone when a gmail email is received even if the phone is on standby (black screen)?

Depends what types alerts (sound, lights) you may desire and what model phone you'd like (example, some phones have LEDs, some do not, etc).

These may be of interest - they basically show that lightweight apps exist to carry the freight when features are missing.

The stock POP/IMAP client that comes with HTC phones is quite effective at notifications - however, it doesn't support push - it does allow great flexibility in setting polling times to vary by account and time of day. (Works with gmail, but oddly not Yahoo mail last I'd checked.)

Perhaps you can try one of the apps I've linked with your friend's phone with Yahoo/whichever and see if that sort of solution might be right for you.

Thanks for the info EarlyMon, I will have a look at those apps :)

I have a Droid 2 Global. When I wake up in the morning the LED is already blinking because the Yahoo mail app has gotten mail. To me this means push mail for my phone.

I think you are right David. I re-tested the yahoo app and I did receive instant notification even with the phone on standby. I am not sure why it didn't work before - maybe there was a 2 or 3 minute delay and I didn't wait long enough!

Anyway, thanks for everyone's help. Now I have to decide which phone to get! I think I may wait until the HTC Sensation is released :)

Hi,

I know this is an old thread but I have a problem with Yahoo and was wondering if anyone else similar?

I have a HTC Wildfire S with Android 2.3 with the Yahoo app installed.
Most of the time the Yahoo new email notifications are instant but quite often if I'm not using my phone (therefore screen is off) I don't get the notifications until I press the power button to turn the screen on. Then all of a sudden all the Yahoo notifications come through.

When I'm at home I have the wifi on all the time and I've set the wifi to stay on permanantly so I know this isn't the cause. I'm also not running any app killers.

Anyone else have this problem or a way to fix it?

Thanks.
