some apps on getjar request you to put a tick in download apps from unknown sources is there much risk to this or not?

Not as long as you are getting apps from reputable sources like getjar, Amazon (they require this too), or the Market (there may be others but I know these three off the top of my head). You need to check this box to install app (.apk) that you get from anywhere other than the Market.

You would need to do this to load apps you receive from emailed or downloaded apks. Just remember that these sources could be a) pirated (which this site has zero policy for) and b) may contain unwanted extra features (viruses, spyware, etc) so make sure you know the source before loading. If you have any doubt, ask here.

yes and no.

yes - because as stated above, now you can install any APK you want, even from non-trusted sources.

no - because you still have to read the permissions and accept the install. Nothing can get installed to your phone without you knowing so if you have a malicious app on your phone, then its because you installed it.

thanks how would i know if i have a malicious app? i got a text from o2 sayin my data is nearly up surprised i have used 500mb nearly and it doesnt get renewed till the 17th hopefully its not my apps runnin the data up but i doubt it

500MB is not much for a data plan. Thats easy to run up in the matter of days or weeks. If you have a weather app, that will run up your data real quick. or if you have a news widget, that can do it too. There's a lot of reasons why you ate all your data in a short time.

a malicious app will generally cause ads to appear in the notification bar. Its not technically malicious because its not doing anything harmful to your phone but its intruding. An app CAN technically give you a virus but right now, thats a bit uncommon. However, an app that is poorly developed can eat your battery and data without knowing.

You could also try turning off android backup. I've heard this could be a data hog.
