Root Unable to delete sound files with File Expert

As a total amateur, I thought I was doing pretty well with my new (pre-owned) Optimus T. I installed Gingerbreak and File Expert without any problem. I want to stop the annoying startup and shutdown sounds on this phone. I can get to the sound files and hit delete, it looks like it's deleting but when it's done the file is still there. I have also tried renaming the file - it says it is unable to rename. Thank you in advance for any advice.

In order to mute the startup sound you have 2 options:

Option 1:
Install & use Silent Boot: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antweb.silentboot&hl=en

Option 2:
Mute system sounds, look for this option in your phone settings, if you can't find it then install Quick Settings and use its Volume control feature to turn off the System volume.
