Help unable to edit video

I have tried to edit video taken with my Galaxy S3 on my computer, but when I publish the video it is all choppy, lengthy black frames, etc. Just a hot mess.
I use Microsoft's Windows Movie Maker. No issue when editing video from other devices. Anyone know what is wrong? Solutions? Maybe even recommend another free good video editor? Thanks.
OS: Windows 8

Have you tried lowering the resolution when taking the video from your S3 and then edit in the computer? It could be the video card on your computer that can't handle the job.

There are a number of things that could contribute to the issues you are having. It could be the codec used, software updates, bitrate issues for audio/video/both, ...

Have you downloaded a codec pack recently? How are you packaging your final product? Did you convert the video pre-edit? Did you convert the final product post-edit?

Don't know anything about codecs.
I just know that before I upgraded my laptop to Windows 8, I was able to edit video from my S3 on Windows Movie Maker with no issue. Now, I can't. However, I can still edit videos fine from other devices.
