Root unable to factory reset - bad recovery

Moto 4G Cant Hard Reset

Guest
Hi,
Recently I've noticed that my Moto 4G has about 4GB of space that is filled up by something I am not aware of - it's not detected as apps, music, or even junk.

Resultantly I've been trying to factory reset my phone, but to no avail.

The phone is rooted, by the way.
So far I've tried:

- Factory Reset through the options menu: FAILED, Phone rebooted and nothing was deleted.

- Factory Reset through Apps: FAILED, same as above.

- Hard Reset through the Recovery Mode: FAILED, I reach the first menu fine (Holding down the power and down vol.), but when selecting 'Recovery' the phone will just boot back to my normal lockscreen again.

I seriously don't know what to do. I don't have access to a PC right now so I can't flash my phone with the stock Android - are there any other ways I can factory reset everything? Please help!

Thanks in advance!

OK - need to know the full model name and what carrier you're on.

If there's any ambiguity in the model name as Motorola is famous for, need to know the year as well.

Whatever you did to root or modify your phone has it really, really screwed up.

Nothing personal, just a fact.

I'd advise trying nothing further without an assessment as to what is broken and how, and how to fix it.

So - the above info may help us get you hooked up with people experienced with your particular model - fixes for this sort of thing are not generic.

Please also provide details on how you rooted.

If you followed instructions from somewhere, please provide the link or links. (If you reply with I just used XYZ, go ahead and search for it, your chances of getting whole again are going to be diminished - again, just a fact ok.)

Hi,
Thanks for the fast reply. Jesus christ, I figured I'd probably jacked something up but I didn't realise it was this bad.

My model is 4G XT1039, I'm on Tesco Mobile. As for the process I used, I first unlocked the bootloader, then fastbooted the boot recovery, and finally I flashed SuperSU.

Desperately looking for a link, but I'm sure it's kind of outdated by now - I rooted it maybe 8 months ago.

Cheers

OK - so you have a second generation, 2014 Moto G.

The video/site you followed had excellent instructions and a simple payload for installation, so it ought to have worked.

Maybe a corrupted download, a glitch, hard to say.

I'm not expert on your model - but for any I know, the issue is your recovery is corrupted and can be fixed.

This may be the right one for your phone -

https://dl.twrp.me/titan/twrp-2.8.6.0-titan.img.html

And that's a simple fastboot flash to install.

Please hold off, I'll move your thread now, and someone expert with your phone can review my suggestion, and give you the correct answer (I might be right or only close - you want exact).

I'll keep an eye out for responses and lurk until you get it solved - if you want me, just say @EarlyMon and I'll get an alert.

Best luck, don't panic, I've seen worse. ;)

Thanks for the help, I'll wait for someone to confirm it before I do anything. The rest of the root works fine, only it seems something stops me from booting to recovery or, for that matter, restoring to factory at all.

Could you (or anybody reading) post some instructions as to how I can flash the TWRP image? Thanks again for all the help :)
