I am planning to upgrade my firmware thru ODIN.. however I am unable to put my phone in download mode.. need to upgrade to 2.2.1 ..the lag is killing me...and the official update is not yet available in India.

Go read the guide thread stick at the top of the forum. I remember putting a link to a XDA thread on 3 button mode there.

Managed to get into the download mode and flashed XWJS5 thru ODIN without checking the repartition on... But this version is sucking the life out of may battery.. 100% to Zero in 3 hrs.. a game of 5 mins used up 15% of the battery so flashed back to DDJP6 ( for India) ...Pls suggest what can I do.. the DDJP6 really lags..

How about u just flash the kernel (e.g speedmod)? That's plenty enough to remove lag.
Tourist In Paradise: Samsung Galaxy S: How to install SpeedMod kernel

no need to flash to any ROM.
