Help Unable to update Android 2.2.1

emekadavid

Lurker
My phone, mytouch 3g slide, was manufactured in 2010.
It has android version 2.2.1.
Software number is 2.15.531.5.
I spoke to HTC chat and was told that the updates for that software were no longer scheduled and/or available.
I refuse to believe that I cannot update the phone!
Now, I'd like to install .apk files from my pc to the phone but the phone does not recognise .apk.
What is the problem?
Is it that the android version is very old? Or am I missing out on something?
Thanks

Yes unfortunately what HTC is telling you is correct. You have a very old version of Android that is no longer supported, and in addition to that the hardware on your phone would probably not support a newer version even if it were available. Internal storage on that device is also very limited.
If you are in a position where you need the phone to do something that it currently doesn't do because of its age and software/hardware limitations, your only choice is to replace it with something newer.

The apk question, what are the apks you're trying to sideload from the pc?
If they're legit then just use the phone's browser to download them then install when prompted

The key to the apk problem may be how you are trying to copy them. Connect to PC, copy to the phone's sd card, then try to open them with a file manager app - that should start the install process.

As Funky says, where you got them from is important. You don't want to install an app that someone has hidden malware inside.
