unable to update apps

Every time I try to update my loaded apps, I get a notification that either, "I have insufficient space to update" even though I have over 2/3 capacity free, or I am unable to update at the default locations." Is there a way to overcome both of these scenarios?

Are you looking at your available RAM, or internal storage? To download/update apps you need available internal storage.

To free up space you can uninstall other apps or delete pictures/videos/music that are stored on your devices internal storage.
