undeletable app

I download a app called "Stocks" and I believe it's a virus, android took it off the market and its undeletable, how do I go about deleting it? I don't want to root and I don't want to go back to factory default.

Hello and welcome to AF. :)

Uh-oh, I am very sorry to hear that, but it seems you might've downloaded a shady app.
I'm afraid the only is a hard reset if you want to get rid of the bad app. You could also try downloading Avast or lookout antivirus and see if that can't help.

Maybe the app set itself up as a device admin?
Check: Settings > Location and security > Select device administrators
If "Stocks" is there, uncheck the box, and then see if you can delete it in the normal fashion.

Good advice!

OP - Have you tried deleting out through the settings or just through the market (hence why you are unable to)?

@Metroid prime I tried both and nothing

@ Mr. LuckyIn settings there is no Location and Security option, just Location, Security, as seperate options. I clicked on both and found nothing about device admins, I am using Evo 3D.

@Kelmar I tried both methods, the app doesnt show up on the market but it shows up in settings, when i click it on it doesnt show the option to uninstall, also i downloaded a uninstall app and all it says it "Uninstall not successful", when i force close the app it crashes my desktop so that android has to reload the desktop again, the "stocks" app is always running so i know its there

HTC load a "stocks" app up by default. So it came pre installed, therefore... undeleteable

EDIT: Just read your OP again, you downloaded it, never mind.

Mr Lucky advice correct.

What is your android version to check go to "Settings>about phone".:)

Cannot find device admin.
Android version 2.3.4
Go to "Settings>Location and Security", Now scroll down and find "Select device administrators" and tap on it. Now you can see all the apps that use administrator permission. Untick your suspicious app. :D

I have android 2.3.4

Like I've said before I am using a Evo 3D and there is NO "Location and Security" as stated above. Yes I understand the administrative permission and device administrators, but there is no way for me to get to the "Device Administrators" because it is not here. So will someone please tell me how to get there?

If you post this issue on "Evo 3D" sub forum someone will help you! :D

Ok so I made another thread about the device admins and I finally got that fixed but the app called "stocks" was not on the admin list, in fact nothing was on the device admin list, so any other way to delete this app? This is not a stock app fyi

Its really a good news. You can perform factory reset will wipe all the user apps. Before do it backup or sync your contacts, calenders, notes. As well as backup your other apps. :D

Assuming you haven't rooted, backing up apps and moving them to SD are features that are enabled by each developer, on an app-by-app basis.

So I have a app I want to back up and since its not available to do so i cant? I downloaded a app while it was free and now its like 5 dollars, i dont want to have to pay for that

You can try it out, using Sprite or MyBackup (I don't recall if both have free ones or not), and see what happens, but again the OS doesn't allow apps to access each other, at that level, by default; having that actually works to protect you from having apps take over your phone. So, if the developer enabled one of them to work with the app, you're good. Otherwise, you'll either need to root (so you can use an app that'll override that barrier), or Google around to see if you have any other options.
