Understand Android version

Hi,

What the 2 filenames below mean? I downloaded theses 2 files to update from Android 2.3.5 to Android 2.3.6 on a Galaxy S2 phone?

File 1) GalaxyS2_I9100_XWKL1_INU_2.3.6.rar

File 2) I9100XXKL1_I9100OXAKL1.rar

I understand the comparaison has more sense with :
XWKL1_INU_2.3.6.rar
XXKL1_I9100OXAKL1.rar

Now : the difference begins with the letters below :

XWKL1
XXKL1

In the settings of the phone menu, I currently can read : XWKDD in the kernel section. The entire kernel version reads :
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD -CL16153 and the line below root@DELL103#2

What is this all about??? I would first guess XXKL1 is most recent.

---o---

Now the two last part don't really match:
INU_2.3.6.rar
I9100OXAKL1.rar

Let's take I9100 out :
INU_2.3.6.rar
OXAKL1.rar

What is this numbering about, what does it mean, how to understand Android numbering?

Thanks,

That's just Samsung coding AFAIK. Not all phones have the same code for firmware. There are regional codes, then base version codes etc. For example, the firmware code for Europe will be different for the firmware code in Singapore even if they both get the same Android version.

Then there's a different firmware code for Tmobile compared to the code for Verizon. Mostly just ignore the codes if you are using official means to update OS.

Hi Chanchan,
What about the 2 files I want to update my device with? How do they compare? Which one should I use tp implement the 235 to 236 update?
Thanks,
Pascal

First of all, are you rooted? Do you have any idea to use Odin or whatever flashing method to use?

You asking for these information clearly shows to me that you do not have enough knowledge to manually update your phone, and I would suggest heading over to the proper forums to learn more, or just do it simple and stick to official update for your phone.

Just download Samsung Kies for PC (Google for it), connect your phone, press update, wait for it to finish, and you're done. The program will do everything for you, including downloading the correct version for your phone.

I have a Samsung Galaxy mini S5570 and Galaxy S2.
I have rooted both. However since a previous update S5570 might not be rooted anymore...
I have updated both phone, Galaxy S5570 through Odin a few times and Galaxy S2 OTA or Kies update i think. Since I have rooted S2, Kies don't see any update for the phone. However 236 is out and the phone is still running on 235. So, Odin is the only way to go to update I understand.

I can follow instructions but I would like to go a little further and understand a little what I'm doing and what happens behind the curtain.

I think my question are still quite simple and this forum should be the right place. If I have more advanced questions that can't be answered here I'll post on XDA.

But XDA is so advanced that I don't feel asking questions until I reach a certain level.

Would someone know which file should I use for 236 update and where is the difference? I have unzipped both files and one has 2 files in it and the other one comes with usual files I use to update CODE, MODEM, GT-CSC the XXKL1 and the other (XWKL1 lists a Kernel and firmware update I think).

What file should I proceed with?
GalaxyS2_I9100_XWKL1_INU_2.3.6.rar
or I9100XXKL1_I9100OXAKL1.rar
