Understanding Android Contacts

In our line of work, we run into a lot of users who are using an Android device for the first time. A common point of confusion for many of them is understanding how contacts work on the Android, with the multiple account types and all. As such, we've created an infographic to help explain how it all works.

Since a lot of new Android users also visit the forums here, I thought I'd share in case anyone was interested! Find it here: Understanding Android Contacts

Very informative. I always save to Google Contacts. I just found out recently by necessity that Google backs up your contacts daily for the past 30 days. So if you accidentally delete a Google contact from your phone just go to your web Gmail account, select Contacts (on left side of screen), select the More tab, and choose Restore contacts from the drop down menu. You can choose any day within the past 30 days to restore to. It saved me a headache.

Thanks David.

I'm currently trying to convert a technophobe friend who lives in UK (I live in Ireland) to the power of android and this will be a great help in the "tutorials" she is asking for. :D

Thanks for that, I really need to clean up my friends list on my google account - so now my new question is, once I clean up my google account, will my phone sync what I have on my phone (with the ones deleted on my google mail account). I assume so, if thats the case, I need to delete my google mail account on my phone, clean it up my google mail account, then reconnect and sync.

Hard work! Android should of at least put a tutorial, pretty much what you have on here on the phone for when you first use it. Would have been nice ;)

Thanks - we're glad you found the graphic helpful! As for cleaning up your Google account - everything should sync across just fine. Contacts deleted from the web interface should be deleted from the phone as well. I'd suggest testing it with a few before investing the time to do them all, however - just to make sure Google's working as expected.

I have just cleaned it up - took out Facebook as contacts as well and now I have all the numbers I need. I now need to odo the same with Outlook and Sync, only downfall is when I did have Facebook added to my contacts, I loved the photos beside the name - oh well looks like I got to make use of the 8MP camera :p
