Understanding battery usage

When I look under battery under the settings, I have a couple questions. First of all, when you click on the graph and it shows the curve of battery drop, underneath it shows mobile network signal, gps on, wi-fi, awake, screen on, and charging. I am assuming the marks under those categories are when they occured during the entire time the phone has been off the charger. If that is the case though, why are there marks under "charging" if it has been off the charger? Also, what does awake mean? When does the phone go awake? Under mobile network signal, what does the grean and the tan colors mean?

On the rest of the list that shows what program is using what percentage of battery, the screen one makes sense (saying how much time the screen is on) but can someone explain the Android OS? I am guessing CPU total is meaning when something is running even if the screen is off, but I am not sure what the keep awake means. Those are the two biggest percentages so I am trying to figure out what is drawing the most battery.

And on another note, a couple days this week when my battery was down to about 20 or 30% by the end of the day when I typically have a lot more than that, I was at a location during the day for a few hours where it has always had poor reception. I did notice that that phone sometimes would say 4g, 3g, or 1x throughout that time. Does that drain the battery a lot when it switches back and forth?
