Root Understanding Rooting Your G1

Right now i have the Android Software 1.6, i i tried to use my G1 and it didnt work and i wind up with the old software and was not able to get the 1.6 back on my phone untill google sent the update to my G1, i dont understand how all these people are doing it and iam unable to Root the G1 successfully so that i can get the wifi hot spot on my phone

this rooting thing i will never get it people put up instructions and they are all over the place and it s never as it statts in the instructions and it is allways something different im done with it.
