Unexplained beeping

Can anyone tell me how I can find out what is causing notification sounds?

My Hero will, at times, beep randomly, but leave nothing in the notifications bar. If I open a task manager I can see that HTC Checkin Service and Settings are the only things running. This process will repeat, whether I close the apps or not, and run the battery down.

Is there some kind of system log I can look at to find out what is causing this? It seems weird that the phone would make the sound but leave no evidence of a notification.

If roaming is on it will bleep everytime it changes.
There is a check box in the roaming setup to turn it off.
It doesnt show in any of the sound settings menus.

Thanks Gordon, I think you're correct, there is indeed a sound option in that menu.

I'd prefer to leave roaming on (national) as the contract I'm on on doesn't seem to charge extra, but is there any reason this would increase battery usage or keep loading the settings app?
I also have "Always-on mobile" which apparently can cause increased battery use, but generally doesn't in my experience.
