Uninstall default application gmail/facebook

czezz

Newbie
I have just gotten new X10 mini pro and I am completly new to Android system.

How can I uninstall some default application ?
Eg. I want to get rid of gmail or facebook.

I tried this way:
Settings > Applications > Manage application > facebook
...but there is nothing like "uninstall/remove/delete".
Is there some other way ?

Hi there,

Do you just want a different app for a particular use? If so, simply installing a competing app will suffice as the OS will recognize a new choice and ask you which you'd like to use as the default app the first time the app you want to replace is launched by an external link.

If it just offends you to have it installed, I don't think I'll be of much help, as I've not figured out how to remove the bundled apps.

Hoping it helps,
Json

the only way to unistall the programs that came with the phone is to root it. its annoying that you cant unistall them but they don't suck up any juice. they are just there.
You and I must be the only people in the world who don't do facebook.
For those of you who do use facebook, you should watch the documentury that South Park did on it. It was an eye opening 30 minutes.

I've always found it humorous that the people that don't use facebook think they're the only ones that don't. There are almost 7 billion people on the earth and 500 million active facebook accounts. That means that the person that shuns Facebook is in an intimate and elite group with 6,500,000,000 other people.

<~~~ doesn't use facebook.

Of the 6 billion people on the planet, how many of them have computers and access to the internet. Most but not all. And out of those 6 billion people how many are either to young or too old to play on computers. Alot. Seeing that im a prison guard i will add all the inmates in the world don't have access to facebook. You must also factor in the homeless. The 6 billion people just got reduced by more than half. And out of all my friends and family i am the only one that doesn't. I base it off all that.

Why don't you factor it in people that can't spell "facebook" as well? If you try hard enough, you could narrow down the pool of eligible participants to 500,000,001, putting you literally in a class by yourself.

You can build the statistics any way you'd like(why not, everyone else does), but the fact remains that a facebook user is the minority.

System apps (apps that's part of the original ROM) can't be deleted unless you have root.

Wow! Nice FB discussion but lets go back to my issue.
Well... I dont use FB neither gmail account.
Basically what I want to do on my phone is to have this:
- phone (just for regular calls)
- text (SMS)
- Web browser (activate internet connection on demand)
optional:
- google maps

So far I have found that to remove default apps I need to have fila manager: SUFBS or Root Explorer.
To install them I need to go to Market. To access Market I need to have gmail account (crap). So I have created one.
Market shows me that both apps need to be paid... crap.

Is there any other freeware way to remove default apps ?

the only way to remove it at all is to root. if you are interested, there is an app called z4root, that you install on the phone, click and bam its rooted. then you can uninstall the bloatware.

another option is to install launcher pro, and that lets you hide apps. so you hide the ones you dont like. they are still on the phone, but you wont see them.

Let's assume:

1st choice:
- install paid appz (SUFBS or Root Explorer) and delete default application. (This way does not need root my phone?)

2nd choice:
- root my phone with z4root ( free avalible in Market ?).
What then? Still require some file manager to remove files ?

3rd choice:
- install launcher pro (free ?)

1 more thing: if I remove some appz and then I decide to have it back - can I just use this procedure:

Sony Ericsson - Support - Phones - Detailed - Backupandrestorets - Xperia? X10 mini pro

and all application come back as it was by default ?

I'm interested to find out what will happen if you remove gmail, like will contacts sync?

ftr I don't use facebook either.

I will tell you what happen as only I get any (freeware) solution how to remove it.
I dont want to have gmail account as well as buying anything on the Market.

Btw. 3rd choice - louncher pro is paid.

I am more and more disapinnted with this product. It seems to be this same carp as iPhone (use our product but only the way we allow u - that sux)

As far as I know the only file managers that grant access to /system/app (where the stock apps are located) are all paid apps and require root to access anything beyond the root of the SD card.

You could also use ADB shell and hook your phone up to your computer and pull those files using ADB (Android Debug Bridge). It's a bit more complicated that way since it's all DOS style command, but I'm sure you can find a guide if you google it or from someone here.

If you remove Gmail everything still syncs fine. Google contacts in your contact list will sync just fine. I've run my phone with and without the Gmail app with no difference.

Just don't go around deleting every app you don't like. Some are actually used by other apps and will break those apps.

Edit: Oh yeah, I should note that using ADB shell to remove apps also requires you to root. Didn't want to be misleading.
