Unknown Messages app

Hi. I have a Messages app on my Galaxy Note 8, a sort of rectangular white word balloon with three blue dots inside (see attachment) but I can't remember where it came from. I suspect it was preloaded but I can't find any info on it.

I would appreciate any help in clarifying it's source.

Thanks.

It's the stock Samsung text app.

That's what I thought. However, when I googled "Samsung messaging app" the images show two lines forming a Messages icon, not the three dots.

This brings me to my second question: that Messages app shows all my contacts but my Contacts app only displays 82 of my 187 contacts. I've tried syncing my Google account but Contacts shows the same 82. All my contacts display on my desktop but not in the Contacts app. Any thoughts?

Thanks so much to all who replied.

There are Google contacts, and there are Samsung contacts that are stored on the phone. It is a perpetual source of frustration that I'm always fighting to get all the PHONE contacts to Google and then delete them. Why on earth would I want device-dependent contacts, when Google stores and syncs everything? So when you open up a contact, you might get a choice of apps with which to open it: a BLUE Contacts icon and an ORANGE Contacts icon. The blue is your Google contacts and orange is Samsung's. If I could get rid of the Samsung contacts, I would. Really.

Boy did I come to the right place! I did not know about the Samsung Contacts. For some reason I didn't even have the Google (blue) Contacts installed. All is well now. I am so grateful for your help.
