Help Unlink Contacts Without Losing Data

Lurker
I have an HTC One M8, running the latest version of KitKat that Verizon has pushed out to date. My problem is that I have a fragmented contact list. This in't a new issue, but one that I'm trying to fix before it gets totally out of hand.

Most contacts are in my Google account, but many reside on the actual device which is mirrored in Verizon's cloud. I spent a lot of time trying to clean up and consolidate everything into one place - my Google contact list. I deleted the contacts from Verizon's cloud and got rid of all duplicates that have accumulated over the years of transferring contact lists from one phone to the next.

I think I'm just about there, but one big problem still remains. At some point, most of my contacts (350/500) from Google were "linked" to contacts in my phone. I want to "unlink" them, and delete the contacts on the phone to keep a single, clean version of my contact list in Google. But, when I've either tried to merge or unlink them, I've gotten a pop-up stating that I could lose data.

Once I get that solved, I would like to set up the "People" contact app on the device to set Google as the default contact list when I add a new contact, so I never have to deal with this again!

Thanks for the help.
