Help Unlock for international sim

Hi

I bought a refurbished GSM Galaxy S5, originally from the AT&T network, but I use it with a Straight Talk sim here in the states.

I'm going abroad and I'd like to get a local sim card in the country I'll be in, but I want to make sure the phone is truly unlocked. I assumed that being able to switch sim cards in and out meant it was, but I've been told that's not necessarily the case... (Also when I went to Mexico with my old phone - HTC One M7 - also Straight Talk originally ATT, I was told I couldn't use a Mexican sim card because that phone wasn't unlocked)

Anyway, I requested the unlock code from AT&T today and they sent it, but when I got to the step where I took out the battery and re-booted the phone, I wasn't prompted with the "Enter the device unlock code". It just booted up like regular.

Does this mean the phone is already unlocked for international use? Sorry for the n00b question and thanks in advance!

In the UK, you're prompted for the unlock code when you put in a sim from another carrier so if it's the same on US phones, either borrow someone's sim from another carrier, put that in and enter the code.
Or if the code stays valid forever (I think it does), just keep note of it until you put your international sim in (check that your phone supports the frequencys used in the country you're going to)
