Unlocked G1, Donut + Debian?

Hi I just got a G1 in the UK. It is firmware 1.6.

I have unlocked it to a non-Tmobile sim. I want to run Debian on it. I have two questions;

1) "Unlocking is not possible with CyanogenMod or any other Android replacement." CyanogenMod Wiki Is this true? Will my sim no longer work?


2) The instructions for putting Debian on Reroblem? - AndroidFanatic Community Forums Suggest using a Jesusfreak firmware that is now over 9months old. Is it possible to do debian coexisting alongside a newer 1.6 firmware?

I have installed Cyanogen 4.11.1 I have installed Debian using this guide
MyHangoutOnline - Tutorials, Downloads, Roms and More.

However it seems like VNC viewer is not working with localhost on 1.6 firmwares, so no GUI for now..
