Android Question

My husband has a Galaxy S4 and this morning it was plugged into the charger, as it is every morning and just like every morning, before I left for work I took the phone off of the charger and handed it directly to my husband so that he could turn on his ringer so I could call and wake him up at a later time. However, unlike every morning this morning when I handed him his phone, his screen was unlocked. I never touched the screen. When I removed the charger cord from the phone, the screen lit up(as does ANY cell phone when you remove the charger cord). He states that his screen is set to automatically lock after 5 minutes and I am now being accused of going through his phone. Much to his disbelief, this just is not the case, however I have no idea how his screen just unlocked. I told him it must have just been an error with the phone, but that is not a good enough answer. I was hoping maybe someone else out there might have experienced the same thing at one time? He has tried to get the phone to "magically" unlock after removing the charger cord again, but of course it will not do it for him. Please help!
