Unlocking New S3

So, this is going to be a bit long! I just wanted to include everything, thanks in advance!

For my birthday this month (March 3rd), my boyfriend surprised me with a Samsung Galaxy S3, which was very exciting considering I have been stuck with a terrible old HTC Rhyme from Verizon. I have MetroPCS, therefore my Rhyme is flashed to Metro and all that.

My boyfriend had looked up ways to unlock the S3 prior to receiving the phone, but when it came to following the instructions he had found, it was not working. His next move was to promptly purchase an unlock code from a site online, Release My Code. They emailed the code the next day. There was one code with 4 methods for unlocking. He tried the last three without success, they were just codes you entered on the keypad. The first method required a non accepted sim card and had to wait until we brought it to a Metro store. In his excitement we brought it to a MetroPCS store the same day. The code he was sent was not working, even with the MetroPCS sim. The guys in the store tried to help and ended up saying that we could leave the phone and they would get more unlock codes.

My boyfriend already bought the S3 from AT&T, he wont say exactly how much he paid, and the code online for $30 (Hopefully he can get a refund). The guys at the store are charging him $50 for the codes that they order, they say they charge more because they are sent 4 codes to try. Then they will charge $10 for the sim card, understandable.
However, they also are trying to charge for more things. They did not explain very well at that moment, they just let him know his total would be $95+ when they completed everything.

Since he really wanted to unlock the phone, they weren't charging anything yet, and they promised they could do it my boyfriend agreed to leave the phone.
I tried not to interfere much and let him handle things, it was his gift to me after all, but if I can save him time and money I'd like to!
I suggested, since the guys at the store haven't called like they said they would, that we just go pick it up! I would have preferred to look online a bit more anyway.

I've read asking AT&T until you get a code works, we have asked once and been denied. We can try that again.
Maybe there are more reliable sites out there to order an unlock code from?
Or possibly something on xda developers? I can certainly look, but a recommendation always makes me feel more comfortable.
It's a new phone and although instructions on xda are usually not too hard to follow, I prefer not to take major risks without collective reassurance of success.
