Unlocking phone -yes? no?

I have a year left on my 2 year contract and wondering if there is any real reason to get my unlock code and unlock my phone, and can I unlock it without having another SIM card to put in it? is there a way to prompt the unlock code entry?

I have been searching around to learn more about this. I do plan to unlock it at some point at least for potential resale later if I upgrade.

Can I unlock it and remain on my T-mobile plan?

Hi mrdeath. :hello:

I'm sure you can unlock and stay with your current Tmo plan. You shouldn't need a different sim unless you move to another GSM carrier. You can get an unlock code from Tmo for free. Here is some more info in their docs.

I'll move this to the T-Mobile forum. I think you'll can get more info on unlocking there.

Thanks! Not wanting to switch from T-mo, just wanted to unlock it.

I got my code this morning, I guess my question is, is there a way to get the unlock prompt without putting a non-tmobile sim card in? (I don't have one, only my T-mo's, and dont know anyone with an ATT sim).

All the docs seems to say "Enter a non-accepted SIM"

You have to have a different sim (i.e. Not T-Mobile) to unlock it. But you don't have to use it for a call or anything that would incur charges besides buying the sim card itself.
