unlocking phone

I have my unlock set up as a pattern. When my phone locked I hit the home key, I then have to swipe the screen and then input the pattern to get into the phone. Why do I have to swipe the screen first in order to put in the unlock pattern? seems like an unnecessary step

It's a fairly common arrangement: one action to wake, one to open lockscreen, then the security test. But it's not universal: my tablet (a Samsung device, as it happens) asks for a pattern or PIN the moment you wake the screen.

You would have to ask Samsung why that choice was made. The one practical merit I can see is that if the home button is accidentially pressed in your pocket you won't end up entering incorrect patterns due to it rubbing against your leg.
