Unlocking question

It's legit, there is nothing they can do with your IMEI, it is needed for the unlock code.

If you root your phone you can do it yourself for free. After rooting just to to the market and look for "Galaxy S Unlock" ... works and it's free. But you must be rooted.

So has anyone tried this? Would any updates (ICS) erase the unlock? Are there any chances of it going wrong and causing it to "brick"?

I rooted my phone, used the above mentioned app to unlock my SIM, and then un-rooted (don't ask my why...I am as green as green can be with Android, so I'm just playing with it :D). In any event - after un-rooting my SIM is still unlocked. So I don't think any updates would "lock" it after unlock.
