So I ran across this video while browsing S2 videos on youtube

I was hoping to get some insight on this whether it was legit or not, and why they needed your IMEI number.
What is the IMEI number used for, and can they hack/harm my phone if they know it?

It's legit, there is nothing they can do with your IMEI, it is needed for the unlock code.

If you root your phone you can do it yourself for free. After rooting just to to the market and look for "Galaxy S Unlock" ... works and it's free. But you must be rooted.

So has anyone tried this? Would any updates (ICS) erase the unlock? Are there any chances of it going wrong and causing it to "brick"?

unlocking your phone does no harm to it and it should not affect OTA updates. But you can just download an app called 'galaxy s unlock' by the author 'helroz' and that works perfect.

Didn't the second poster say it had to be rooted in order for this app to work? My S2 is not rooted, that's why I'm looking for an alternative way.

I rooted my phone, used the above mentioned app to unlock my SIM, and then un-rooted (don't ask my why...I am as green as green can be with Android, so I'm just playing with it ). In any event - after un-rooting my SIM is still unlocked. So I don't think any updates would "lock" it after unlock.
