Root Unrevoked 3.3 and Sprint OTA 3.70 Question

Happy New Year to all!!! I'm a long time visitor to this forum, but this is my first post.

I've had my EVO for about 2 months. Here are my current versions:
Android: 2.2
Baseband 2.15
Software: 3.29.651.5
Phone was rooted using unrevoked 3.22

My EVO has been running perfectly since I rooted it the first time with unrevoked. This is my first Android phone and I'm still trying to understand all the rooting, flashing lingo, etc. I'm prompted for the latest 3.70 OTA from Sprint and keep cancelling as I was waiting for unrevoked to support this new release. Now that the new version of unrevoked has been released, I have a question about what I should do first. I've read as many threads as I can about my question and the answer doesn't seem to jump off the page for me which is why I'm starting this thread. Any guidance is very much appreciated.

What should I do first?
Update with the OTA and then run unrevoked again like I did the first time when I bought my EVO? Or, should I re-root (without un-rooting) using the new version of unrevoked on my current software version and then do the OTA? Something else?

I really don't want to have to get into flashing a different ROM, etc as I want to try and keep things as simple as possible. If its more complicated than that, then thats first and I'll go with that approach 2nd.

I don't necessarily need a click by click explanation, but if something could easily share with me the best process to follow I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you all can provide.

Why not just flash a 3.70 based rom? I have been running Fresh 3.5.0.1 since Flipz released it on Dec 21st and no issues, no bloatware and no risk of losing root and not regaining it right away.

Thanks for the reply. As I mentioned in my post above, I'd rather not get into flashing roms as I haven't done that before and don't necessarily want to get into that. I'd really just like to root the phone and leave as is.

You have just gotten started then. :)
There is so much more than just rooting your phone. Different Devs have made changes that you might like or not like. Themes that change icons and layouts. Make a nandroid backup and start experimenting a little. Rom Manager makes it easy for the newbies to flash roms and make backups without going to Recovery. I was a little leery about changing them when I first rooted my CDMA Hero.....on my second android phone and my wife is getting one soon for me to play with also.

BTW, my Fresh Rom looks and functions just like the recent OTA update but I still have root.

I appreciate the words of confidence and your experience in initial hesitation but what sounds like a lot of success in flashing and rooting your phone.

I definitely want to experiment in the future and will do so. At this time, I just want to keep things very simple and just keep with a root.

Can you give me advice on my current setup and desire to just root? Should I install the OTA (which will cause me to lose unrevoked root) and then re-root using the new unrevoked 3.3? Should I unroot using the dummies guide, install the OTA and then re-root using unrevoked 3.3?

Thanks again for all your help.

I haven't used the new release of Unrevoked 3.3. I do know that there are manual ways to root the newer Hboot. I would find what you can and read it before you decide to do the OTA update or to unroot. There are threads on it and there are alot on here that are open to helping those interested in it. XDA is another great source for that info as well.

Thanks.

I too am hoping that someone can help. I'm sure just unrooting it, running the Sprint 3.70 OTA, and then rerooting would work but I'm just hoping I can get some good guidance on the best way.

well, I decided to unroot using the dummies guide, then updated the OTA, then re-rooted using unrevoked 3.3 and all is well....the only downside is that I didn't think my apps, etc would be deleted, but they were and had to start over.

Yeah, that was the first thing I bought after I was backup and running...thanks again for all your suggestions earlier. I do think next time I will go for flashing a rom with the OTA built in...was just a little more nervous this time and still learning.

i have the latest EVO OTA 3.70.651.1 and have root through unrevoked 3.3. I've made a nandroid backup through the clockwork mod recovery, and I'm ready to install Fresh 3.5.0.1.

question is 1) do i need to run unrevoked again after the ROM run in order to get root again and reinstall the superuser app, and 2) is there any concern about switching back and forth between OTA 3.70-based roms and the commercial OTA 3.70 rom?

Any help is appreciated!

I am extremly dumb to all of this, but I will try to say what I want to do, and someone can let me know if I can do it.
I have the EVO rooted forever using the link from this site, I did it in October.

I uninstalled a lot of the stock Sprint apps and did not make a good backup when I did it. I downloaded and tried to install the new OTS 3.70 and the phone hung every time I tried and gave me the android logo and an exclamation point on the screen.

how do I do the upgrade to the 3.70? Do I unroot the phone? Can I get the new updates using this 3.3 thing I just read about?

How do I get my phone back to completely factory settings with all sprint apps installed?

Thanks

I'm in roughly the same situation as the OP. I'm running stock Android 2.2 on my Evo 4g, and am rooted with Unrevoked 3.2. I only rooted the phone so I could run Wifi Tether and SetCPU, and I have absolutely no interest in flashing custom ROMs.

Now I'd like to update to OTA 3.70.651.1 but I really don't want to go through the hassle of backing-up/restoring and/or reinstalling apps and data. I know that there are roooted OTA updates on XDA, but from what I understand they'll all wipe the phone.

Is there any way to update to OTA 3.70.651.1 that doesn't involve wiping the phone?
