Root Unroot before JB update?

Hi Folks,

I've been reading around a bit, but haven't seen my specific question answered to the point where I am comfortable I know what to do yet. If it has been answered, forgive the duplicate question and point me in the right direction please.

I rooted my Maxx almost a year ago using a one-click root method I found here at Android Forums. I mainly wanted to see if I could do it, and I wanted to use an app hiding application that required root. I have since quit using the app-hiding application, but did unintall some of the bloat I wasn't using/didn't want. So now I want to do the JB upgrade, but am afraid I will brick my phone if JB tries to update some bloatware I uninstalled.

Should I do a factory reset BEFORE upgrading to get the bloatware back (will that even work)? And then go ahead and do the upgrade? I really don't need to be rooted at the moment, so I'm not hung up on losing root. I would have to go back and find the software I used to root it to unroot it, which will probably take several hours, but that's not going to put the bloatware back. Does it even matter?

I am just nervous about the update trying to modify something that's not there and crashing and bricking my phone. Any suggestions on the appropriate way to proceed would be appreciated. (I've read the problems folks are having and am ok with dealing with those potential issues after the upgrade).

Thanks,

Gary

it won't brick you. it also won't install JB. doing a factory reset should fix the problem, and you should be able to update to JB

otherwise there are ways to do it and keep/regain root or if you keep getting a failure after a reset (like i did)

Thanks. Guess I'll do the factory reset after dinner, and then load JB. Will probably do another FR at that point. (nothing to lose, right?) and then start loading up my apps again.

If you haven't done the FDR yet you can also manually reload the bloatware if you need to (if you need anything specifically, let me know as I haven't done either of the dusty Razrs yet).

At that point you can retain root when installing the update AND you don't have to do the FDR and set everything up again.

Alternatively, you could use an app like Titanium Backup to save your data to make it easy to set up again after going to JB.

I went ahead and did the FDR. That obviously wiped everything, but the bloatware didn't come back. I went ahead and did the JB update and it worked. I did another FDR just for the heck of it after JB updated, and then went about returning my phone to usability. Everything seem so to be fine, although I had a problem getting some widgets working at first (but eventually they worked).

So far so good. Holy crap - Chrome takes up a TON of space.

Is the JB update only coming through in certain areas or something? As I said in the above post, I flashed back to stock and took all the updates and ended up where I started, on fl24.
