Root Unrooting Reverb?

I have only modified my Reverb in two ways. I rooted it following these instructions: http://androidforums.com/reverb-all-things-root/652290-root-reverb-no-pc-required.html, and then turned off update notifications using this method: http://androidforums.com/reverb-all-things-root/701815-getting-rid-update-notifications.html

My phone has had a variety of issues lately, so I think it's time I apply the update to JB. I'm currently on ICS 4.0.4. I've enabled the update notifications again and tried to apply the current Android updates to my phone, but keep getting the - 7 error message. The Device Status of my phone is "modified." I'm thinking the best approach at this time is to unroot it and return to it's original state, and then try and apply the update, but a I can't seem to find a simply way to do that when I've searched around.

Most of what I've found involves these very complicated scenarios where people have flashed custom ROMs on their phones and are looking to back out of it. My issue is nothing that complex. I still have the stock ROM on my phone just rooted. How do I unroot? Do I have to do some sort of hard reset on the phone to bring it back to factory specs? I figure there must be some method that was as simple as the rooting....

Delete the su and BusyBox apps. That should "unroot" the phone. Whether any rooted app modified things to the point that updates won't work is another matter.

If you did what I did in the notifications thread, go back and undo everything you did in there, too.

Use Odin to reinstall the stock recovery. If you don't have the files, they can be found here:

Stock Recovery
Dev-Host - reverb-stock-recovery.tar - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service

Odin 3.04:
http://www.oudhitsquad.com/android/tools/Odin3-v3.04.zip

Once you have the stock recovery in place, the JB update shouldn't be a problem.

After the JB update is done; there will probably be another update to M6; and then yet another that goes to M12 (unless of course it goes straight to M12 the most current one). In any case, the M12 is so far the most current update to date, and where everyone is trying to get.

Once you are there, follow mrg666's thread to be rooted (and most definitely download and install his kernel!):

http://androidforums.com/reverb-all-things-root/765187-recovery-cwmt-6-0-3-6-jb-md6-mi2.html

This should be a fairly painless way to update and root.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the replies, but it appears the update failures have nothing to do with rooting. My phone is now not rooted and I'm still getting "status 7" error messages. It appears that my phone is trying to update from MB3 to M06, although the text is microscopic.

I've tried updating from cache, external storage, and wiping the partition and trying the process from the beginning with the same result. The only thing I haven't done is wipe data/factory reset, but I'm starting to think that's my only option.

Has this update been problematic in the past? As I remember, I think that's why I turned off update notifications to begin with....

Well nothing says you MUST re-root... you could just reinstall the stock 3e recovery along with the 4.0.4 ICS you already have, and call it a day. The updates will follow. Best way to do that route is re instal the stock rec., & use Kies.

Well I did the factory reset and I'm still getting "status 7" assert failure messages. It doesn't appear the "factory reset" truly is one.

Can someone point me to some guidance somewhere on how to use Odin. I've downloaded the program and the tar file, but not sure of what other parameters need to be enabled. I've attached a screen shot of my settings below:

TIA

"Now, to use Odin, fire it up if it's not still on. Plug the device into the computer using the USB cable. Check for the blue rectangle near ID:COM and make sure "Re-Partition" is NOT CHECKED OFF!!! I repeat NO CHECKMARK!!! Once you know the device and computer are connected properly, click the button labeled "PDA." You will now see a file explorer window. Navigate to the desired file and chose it. File explorer will disappear. If you are sure you want to proceed, click "Start" at the bottom of the program window.

In the message box, lower left corner, you will see what Odin is doing with your device. If all goes well, there will be no error messages and the device will reboot into the Android OS."

Also make sure the reboot option is not checked.

OK, but these two statements seem to contradict one another. It appears that Auto Reboot is checked, if the device is going to reboot.

Don't worry about it if you're going back to stock.

What I was thinking of is when installing CWM, which is when you don't want auto reboot because you need to reboot into recovery instead of into the OS.

Well, I can't get Odin to successfully flash the ROM.

I tried different cables, different USB ports, putting the TAR file in different locations, and even installing a newer version -- 3.09: it always fails on step three -- SetupConnection. It never seems to be communicating with the phone, even though it has blue status in the COM port.

I feel like I may be missing a step somewhere. Does the phone need to be in Download mode when flashing with Odin?

Yes. Place phone in download mode to use odin

You also need to make sure your phone is in download mode BEFORE you plug it in, otherwise Odin will not recognize it.

Thanks guys. I got Odin to work no problem once I put the Reverb in download mode. (Is there somewhere on this site where this procedure/information is laid out succinctly...?) I was using this as my guide http://androidforums.com/reverb-all-things-root/657374-oudhs-soft-brick-cwm-recovery-support.html and it didn't mention anything about putting the phone in download mode. Maybe it was understood?

Anyway , despite the fact the phone was flashed with the stock recovery ROM I'm still getting status 7 error messages. It keeps failing on the Boot Animation asserts. I recalled that I renamed them to disable them, but I just restored the files, and it didn't make a difference.

I would have thought that flashing back to the stock ROM would have restored everything to when I purchased it...? I also thought it odd that my downloaded Apps were still on the phone? Did Odin do its job? It said it completed flashing the ROM successfully.

Again, am I missing a step? Am I misunderstanding what stock recovery is? I thought I was restoring the phone to its OOB condition. The ROM on this phone was never flashed before tonight. It's still running ICS. I purchased it in Nov 2012, if that makes a difference.
