Root Unrooting to Vodafone ROM

Lurker
I am currently using a HTC Desire on a Vodafone ROM. If I were to root using unrevoked, install custom ROMs and whatever will I be able to unroot my phone using this Vodafone RUU: Here.

Or would I have to use this RUU: Here and then update up to 2.33.161.2 OTA?

I believe that the important thing is that it's a Vodafone UK RUU, and that you should be able to use the more recent one directly. The other one looks very old to me (pre-2.2 judging by the radio version). Do the numbers in either file name correspond to the software and radio versions of your current firmware?

If you have a goldcard you would be able to use an RUU from another network or an unbranded one if you have a need. It's a good idea to make one of these anyway - look for a post by DanFrance and check the FAQs in his sig.

Yes, the first one's firmware software number corresponds to the one I have now but I don't know about the radio. How can I check that?

I have read his FAQ already but intend to keep reading it a few more times, it is a great guide for inexperienced people like me. I only have one SD card so can I turn it into a goldcard and then use it as my normal storage card?

The radio version is called "baseband" in about phone->software information.

But the official firmware (which is what you are using, and what an RUU installs) will have one radio for one firmware version, so if one matches I expect the other will.

Edit: as I say, I believe you can use either, so I was only asking about software versions because if the numbers match what you currently have it will restore exactly your current firmware, which might be useful to know.

Yes. And afterwards, no matter what you do with it, it will remain a gold card.

Once you make it into a gold card there won't be any ill effects will there like the SD card not functioning properly or something?

Yep, I just checked they are both the same. Thanks for your reply :).

Nope.

The advice from the knowledgeable people here is to use the goldcard as your everyday SD card (so you don't accidentally forget it if you need it). And if you buy another SD card, make that one a goldcard as well.

Ahh right. Thanks for all the help, it is much appreciated.

Just download the 2.33.161.2 Vodafone UK RUU and flash it, no gold card required. Doesn't even matter what radio (baseband) you're on as it all gets reloaded with the RUU

Really? If I wanted to flash one of the generic roms I would require a goldcard though wouldn't I?

I've seen you around the Vodafone eforums. Have you rooted your desire and then tried flashing the Vodafone RUU?

I've got an unbranded Desire so I just use the unbranded RUUs...the gold card is needed to flash an RUU different from your phones original version number. If your Desire is a Vodafone handset that came on an x.xx.161.x ROM then you don't need a gold card to flash an x.xx.161.x RUU. You will need to latest one, though, which is 2.33.161.2

Oh right. I'll just make a gold card anyway just in case I want to flash to an unbranded RUU.

I have one more question..I have read about clockwork recovery cause troubling with the Desire. What is the likelihood of something going wrong because I REALLY can't afford to brick my phone.

I can't see any way that you'll brick a phone with recovery.

The main issue to watch out for is boot loop after first backup used via clockwork. If it happens, restore the backup just taken and all should bee fine from then on in

You mean if I root my phone using unrevoked, then make a nandroid back up in clockwork and then if something goes wrong and I try to use the back up I will end up in a boot loop and to fix it all I would have to do is restore the back up again and all will be sorted?

Sorry, I still have a few more questions. My phone is locked to Vodafone so do I need to debrand first or can I just root it? All I want to do is just try different roms that have Apps2SD+ support.

Also is there an alternative way to creating a partition on the SD card for Apps2SD+ support other than GParted & ROM Manager?

Thank you.

1. You can just root it
2. You can use unrEVOked and flash AmonRA instead of CWM which allows you to partition the SD card. It's what I use
