Help Unused Cores

Hey Fellow Droidies,

Yesterday i recieved a mail about a new app and as i've used it on my computer i thought i would take a look at it. It's called CPU-Z

Anyway, as i was checking the SOC tab i noticed that only 2 of the 4 cores on my phone are actually active. I loaded up the internet, youtube, gallery and my music player and checked again to see if anything changed and it never, still 2 cores.

My question is :- is this normal? why have 4 cores if only 2 are being used, maybe what i'm using only needs 2 cores, i really don't know.

Any ideas?

If the cores aren't needed, they arent active.

Loading up internet or email shouldnt be enough of a strain to activate the other cores


& they usually flash on for a second when needed and then shut back down. They really shouldnt all stay on unless you're playing some really intense games

I thought loading up them apps might put a strain on the phone enough to get the cores rocking, like you say a labour intense game will only start them though.

Its entirely possible loading them up may have caused them to come on for a brief moment, but it appears to me that app is only showing you CURRENT CPU states.

If you're interested in looking at the overall history of the cores, there should already be apps out that do specifically that.

Yeah it only shows the cpu load in real-time. i used that same app and even though i had my CPU clocked at Minimum 1700MHz, core 2 stayed stopped. I dont really understand that myself tbh
CPU Spy is better for getting a history of cpu frequency use but it doesnt show history of indevidual cores. Let me know if anyone knows an app that does :beer:

If its not needed, its off. Tbh, the more its off the better.


It could also be that the app is buggy. It did just come out a I've already seen bugs reported for the nexus 4.
