Help unusual behaviour when texting

yesterday I sent a load of texts to people at lunchtime and had no replies. Today I received a load of replies within 15 mins. It felt like they didn't get sent unti today, at which point people replied.

Also, I have 3 texts that I tried to send yesterday and today that say they are in the process of sending (the animated ring is showing on all of them) but they never actually go.

When I first hit 'send' I get a window pop up with 'no network connection - mobile data is disabled. this message will be sent when mobile data is enabled.' I don't understand this, I never had it before, although my mobile data is turned off the phone is connected to my broadband (other internet and network things are working OK).

I am also seeing the message 'converting to multimedia message' even though they are short and just plain text without pictures, emoticons etc.

I tried a restart but not a battery pull yet.

Any ideas on what's going on?

A couple of other things which may be relevant:
I did a BP and the texts are now showing as sent MMSs.
This was a long thread of texts with a friend which included MMS messages but now i'm only seeing these 3 texts and nothing of the previous ones.

This only seems to have happened with this one contact, except the impression had of non sending yesterday until today involves 5 different contacts.
