Help unwanted notification sound for gmail

lazylew

Newbie
For some messages that arrive in my gmail there's a notification sound.
Where are the settings to turn this off?
Using Motorola moto e 1st generation.
I'm a newbee to smart phones, so be gentle please :)
EDIT: almost forgot to mention that sometimes there's a notification sound also for I have no idea what... no new mail, no sms.

Hi, if you go into 'Settings' in your Gmail app then tap on your account you can turn notifications on or off and choose whether to have sound and/or vibrate.

Does the 'mystery' notification happen often/regularly or at random intervals?

Gmail is sorted now, thanks!
The mystery-sounds are irregular and luckliy quite rare.
I'll take note the next time(s) I get one and see if there's some pattern in the time intervals.

At least your Gmail is sorted.

It is unusual to get a notification sound without a visual indication in the 'Notification bar', but when you narrow it down for the mystery notification, you can verify it by disabling notification for each individual app in Settings - Apps - All. Just tap the appropriate app to access the setting in 'App info'.

So far no more sounds have appeared.
It's good to know the location of the apps - there must be a few I don't need/want and can uninstall.

Yes, it's also one of the first places to go if you have any problems with an app misbehaving - you can clear the app data cache and/or do a 'Force stop' which will usually clear the occasional glitch.

One thing I haven't found yet also is how to silence the phone completely for a certain time period.
On my regular cell-phone I had "profiles" that I could choose; before going in a concerthall for instance, I just had to pick the "silent" profile with setting "temporarily" and set the timer to end it at 23h.
