Update: 2.1 OS upgrade for Rogers HTC Magic+

While it is true that Rogers' HTC offerings are slim, overall HTC's offerings in Canada are slim.

TELUS has looked pretty chummy with HTC though snapping up a top Android phone at the time (HTC Hero) when even Engadget thought it was heading to AT&T and a top Android device today (HTC Desire), which ONCE AGAIN Engadget thought was headed to AT&T.

They haven't learned yet the the FCC filings also cover Canadian devices and now that AT&T/Rogers/Bell/TELUS all have the same bands.
 
I have used MyBackup for bookmarks. There should be a way to encrypt and backup the passwords...

Because the most annoying part of hard resetting is having to log in to every site again...
 
Thanks Mary, mjschmidt, GBD HTC and everyone else for getting us this far, it's definitely good to see that we're in the home stretch for 2.1 after Google's approval.

That being said it shouldn't have taken nearly this long and been such a battle, and as mentioned earlier a little more communication, status updates go a long way to keep the customers happier.

Clearly Rogers has stock of these phones to sell and some customers are more educated about what the phones offer. If those same phones are on the latest version of the O/S (Android) that they can reasonably support, then they have a longer shelf life and are more useful to existing customers.

We already know other carriers have plans to update the exact phone as our Magic to 2.2 so we know it's possible. The question now is who we need to contact to make it happen. It's sounding a lot like deja vu actually this song and dance, but as far as I know 2.2 is the last update that's possible for the Magic and I'm fine with that. I just don't see why we can't go to it.

I was told by a Rogers rep that they got a bad batch of htc phones and were no longer selling them. I got the liquid e which comes with 2.1. It's a good upgrade. I am strongly considering getting the vibrant from bell and unlocking it. Rogers just sucks when it comes to Android hardware and support. my advice to Rogers customers, get the best plan you can and buy an Android phone usable on the Rogers network.
 
How can anyone be defending Rogers? First off I started with the Dream. They took out the virtual keyboard and loaded a bunch of useless apps. They refused to upgrade it to 1.6 so I bought a Magic with promise that it would be updated. It will but I expected more... Rogers have proven with every update that it just cant do android. As soon as my contract is up im leaving Rogers forever. Look at the Motorola Droid, started with 2.0 and its already on 2.2 in a year. We have the Magic and still on 1.5. I dont know any other phones that are still on 1.5. Do not say we are whining because if i want Google Goggles or any other update I can not get it because its 1.6 and up at least. Rogers proves it can not and will not handle android, I will go to Telus or Bell.

Rogers shows exactly ONE HTC phone available now, the well over 1 year old Magic. Slim isn't exactly the word I would use!

They have 12 Samsung models, 9 Nokia, 9 Blackberry, 8 LG, 3 Sony etc.

Telus carries 3 HTC models in Ontario (Desire, Hero, Snap)
 
I want to hop on the blame Rogers wagon. Why?
Because I bought the phone from them and not HTC.
Because my phone has useless Rogers clutter on it, they call is apps
Because my phone flashes Rogers when I turn it on
Because Rogers does not want me to root my phone
Because Rogers has a data waiver to be signed by geeks like me
Because Rogers charges me for the phone more then they paid for it, even with a 3 year contract.
Because Rogers charges me for a minute when I talked for 15 seconds
 
how is anyone happy? Mary basically told us nothing. we're right back to square one, waiting in limbo until google approves this "old" 2.1 software. who knows how long this will take? Whats the difference between the beginning of this year and now? NOTHING! we're STILL waiting for this anicent 2.1 OS to be released!

I have a question about the OTA means of updating.
I live in an area where the signal (Reception) is terrible and I'm worried that an OTA update will not complete before I lose the signal.
Will I be able to do the update through Wi-Fi instead or do I have to go some place where I get full signal.

Personaly, if I had any concerns like that, I would take them up on the "in store" option, because they will blame YOU if it bricks when your running the update, but if it bricks when they do it, it is all on them.

IT IS VERY VERY SAD AND DISAPPOINTING TO SEE THAT ROGERS AND HTC ARE STILL SELLING HTC MAGIC+ PHONES TO NEW CUSTOMERS WITHOUT GIVING THEM THE LATEST ANDROID O.S. IN THE MARKET, WHICH IS FROYO ANDROID v2.2, THAT HAS ALREADY STARTED COMING ONTO PHONES EQUALLY OLD AS HTC MAGIC+ (MOTOROLA DROID FOR EXAMPLE).

I FEEL THAT THEY SHOULD STOP SELLING HTC MAGIC+ IF THEY CANNOT SUPPORT IT. NO MORE PEOPLE SHOULD BE FOOLED BY THIS. :(

I have two questions (I'll let the "whose fault is that" train pass by...) :

1- Will we be able to use our phone to tether with 2.1? I've got this awesome 6gb data plan, and I'd sure like to connect my phone to my laptop when I'm out in a caf

I bought my HTC Magic phone unlocked online. I am using it in US with AT&T carrier. I wanted to know whether the OTA will work for me? Would Rogers/HTC provide a procedure for v2.1 upgrade (RUU) like last time they did for E911/Sense UI upgrade which had worked for me?

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

2. Google is not "rolling out" the update. Google has to approve the update. After Google approves it, HTC will send out the update OTA. The 911 bug fix update was different because it was not OTA.

The free version of PDAnet isn't very usefull since it blocks most sites.

I still think Rogers, HTC, Google, or whomever, should find a way to offer tether without paying for it or rooting phone. I have a CRAPberry, for work and can tether with that for free from Rogers. If it's on BB, it should be on other phones too.
