Help Update Google Apps ?

I'm coming from a HTC where I can Google applications like Maps, Gmail etc in Market and update them. On the Defy they are on the phone, I don't seem to be able to tell what version they are and they don't appear in my list of apps in market ? Silly question perhaps but how do I update them ?
