Help Update has failed (from 2.3.4)

Just got this phone from Amazon, had trouble activating after getting a new SIM card, but finally got it activated. After trying to update, it fails during unpackaging then reboots and I get a "Update had failed" prompt. this has happened a few times now. Root checker says I am not rooted and do not have root access so I dont think thats the problem.

Welcome to Android Forums.

I assume "fails during un-packaging" means that it downloaded completely and was in the process of installing. Correct?

Did you do a Factory Data Reset as the first thing after activating the phone? It is the only way to gain some margin of trust in a phone not obtained directly from the carrier.

Thanks for the reply! Yes ive done several FDRs and each time the update still goes about 2/3 of the way then phone reboots and I get the prompt. I'm not sure if the phone had been rooted before. I've tried rooting and unrooting using Pete's Motorola Tool but that hasnt worked either.

The update is a big patch file. You have to have the old version of this and that software (the react version) for the update to that element to succeed. If it doesn't find it then it stops, reboots, and gives you an error message.

It looks to me (from what little I see) like the phone was root-ed and something was deleted. It was then un-root-ed and sold.

I went looking for instructions from Lars on how to flash back to stock but have not yet found it. Try sending him a PM.

Your best bet if the stock image is messed up is to use rsd lite to flash the stock image. You can get that here. Just flash the newest.

With all the trouble you are having, I suggest at least one master reset after flashing.

Make sure the battery is charged before you flash.

Is that what you were trying to do?
