Update or wait?

Let my preface this post by stating I am new to smartphones (I recently purchased a Droid Razr Maxx still operating with "Gingerbread") AND I understand this may be subjective and may vary with personal experiences...

From what I have been reading on this forum (and, others), the "ICS" is not overwhelming positive. Heck, it seems like the download is a tossup for people. Some have success. Some don't and find many issues (no Flash support and unusual battery drain as some examples). I am sure there are other possible issues as well.

So my dilemma...to update or continue to run "Gingerbread." I actual enjoy what the phone already does with "Gingerbread."

My first thought was there will be many bugs to fix in the coming weeks or months. I would think that would be expected with any newly released operating system update. But, after seeing so many issues from people who have a VASTLY SUPERIOR knowledge of smartphones than myself, I was thinking it might be best to wait awhile before deciding on the update. Wait to see your experiences and/or of such issues will be resolved.

That said, will I be able to stay with run "Gingerbread" or will I start to notice apps (or the phone itself)not running as smoothly, or at all, after they started to be update or designed to run on "ICS"?

Please understand I am not discrediting "ICS" in any way. I have no experience or expertise to do such. I am just trying to be as informed as possible and make a responsible decision based on the experiences of most and not merely on media hype.

Any thoughts?

I would without hesitation say to update. Its ultimately your choice but I would. I have not had any issues with ICS since I got it.

Unless you "need" the flash playing, I would update.

I have seen some threads about pre-install steps to help the upgrade go more smoothly.

edit: since your phone is fairly new to you, the factory reset that is recommended before installing the upgrade shouldn't cause you to have to do a ton of resetting your "personalization" of the phone

True! I think I have only 5 apps. And, redoing contacts is not a big deal.

I am not sure I would miss Flash. What would be affected by lack of Flash?

Do you do a factory reset before or after the download? Or both?

I've read to do it before, and some people are doing it after if things aren't acting right.

I didn't do any and have not had problems, so far. :lucky:

It doesn't matter if you do it before, or after you update. It's highly recommended that you do a factory reset with such a major OS update. Hope this helps. :)

It supports flash. You just have to redownload it from the market (err...Google Play Store). That said, it doesn't support flash very well, certain embedded flash videos do not work.

As far as whats effected by not having flash. Well, you don't have access to flash videos on the internet. If you don't regularly watch videos inside your browser, it will not effect you (and again, flash is available, just broken. Some videos do play just fine).

For me, I was wondering the same thing, as to whether to upgrade or not. All I've had to do is read these forums for a few hours and it's very clear to me that I have no desire or want to upgrade to ICS. I like my phone and OS the way it is right now. My time has now been spent reading about rooting/unrooting so I can do what I need to do, so the OTA update to ICS doesn't occur on my phone. That's my focus for now.

If that's what you want with your phone, great. You should remember that people who have issues are far more likely to post then people saying "everything is perfectly fine". The number of people who have had issues is actually quite small, and those problems are generally pretty minor. But again it's up to you what you do with your phone. If you want to keep gingerbread, knock yourself out.

I'd definitely recommend to update. It made the phone MUCH smoother overall, and greatly improved battery life. :D

Most of the issues people are having are due to not having done a factory reset yet. But in your case since you only have 5 apps installed. It may not even be necessary.

Thanks for your acceptance of my decision :). Seriously though, based on the bugs that have been reported + the changes to function/feature that have been reported, I don't see me upgrading to ICS anytime soon. Any benefit, to me, is just not worth what you lose and the amount of time spent attempting to get things back to the way they were.

+1. I'm very happy as is and have a phone that does what I need which is the bottom line for me. I used to jump on every little and big update that came along and usually found it to not be any more helpful than the one I left and frequently was more annoying. I've decided to hang tight and just enjoy this awesome device rather than have to tweak the crap out of it yet again.
If your not rooted op , you could root and then freeze the updater app using the titanium app. That way no annoying update pop ups or stealth auto loads in the middle of the night. Also, rooted you can enable the free wifi, bypassing the need for 3rd party apps to tether wirelessly. In any case enjoy gingerbread.

Personally, it was a major pain to upgrade. Had alot of problems and had to reset to fix it. That being said, was it worth it? I don't see it. The battery is about the same and maybe even a bit worse since the upgrade. The speed or smoothness is the same. There's no change. There are some thing that I like that are different and some that I don't like. I would definately say this is no huge leap from GB at all. If you like what you have, don't upgrade. The phone acts and looks the same as it did with GB, with a slight disadvantage battery wise. There are differences but none of them are significant upgrades to make me want to do this over.

Yup. With ICS update I see no need to root and flash a rom. I am very happy with ics and my battery life is also a huge marked improvement over gingerbread.
