Update within Gingerbread

I have a SGS+ which is standard, baseband version is I9001XXKF8. It's firmware is 2.3.3. It was bought and is being used in Saudi Arabia and is unlocked as standard. I've tried updating through the phone but am told no update is available. I know GB is now up to at least 2.3.7; is there anyway to manually update to this version?

Samsung does not update via phone but via Kies. Install Kies on your PC, plug in your phone and check for updates using that program

So what is the point of Settings>About Phone>Software Update>Check for update?
I'll give Kies a go, thanks.

Samsung just did not bother removing it, because if the phone is carrier branded, that option is active since carriers can by themselves push the update.

However even for carrier devices, its safer and more stable to use updates via PC software IMO. Not sure really how it is with Google, but in other OS I've been through, there is a vast difference in file size between the Over-the-air (OTA) update and the PC update, usually the OTA is just 1/10 of the PC update size, mainly because OTA only replaces the files needed to be replaced, while the PC update reinstalls everything.
