UPDATE Your G1 manually

Where do i find out what RC i have at the moment?

Is the RC different for each country or is it purely an Android general update?

Tate, go to Settings -> About Phone

scroll to the bottom of the screen and you will see Build Number. You should be able to see if you are running which RC you are running

Under the "Build Number" heading it says this:

"1.0 TC5-RC7 112931"

Does that mean i am increadibly out of date if RC30 is basically out?!

Edit -> Looking at the updates they are all TC4-RC29, but my fone is TC5, does that mean i am actually way ahead of everyone? heh

Hey Tate, it seems like they have another set up for the UK. Or gave you guys advanced models lol. My G1 is on TC4-RC30. So I guess you are ahead of me.

Hmm strange that they are keeping UK and other places seperate?

When updates become available does you handset tell you?

Yes, it asks you if you would like to update it now or later. Then you see an arrow pointing to a microchip to signify the update.

Well i haven't seen anything like that yet so i guess i am ahead in some way, or they have just not bothered with UK G1's at all yet...either way..wierd and annoying.

Isn't this thing supposed to be open? Who cares about a jailbreak?

Already, this is starting to sound like an iPhone-esque cat and mouse game.

Some people want jailbreaks on their iPhones to be able to run apps not available in the iTunes App Store

However, since the Android platform allows you to install apps not from the Android Market anyway, jailbreaking is pointless for such people. On the other hand, it also means that the not-so-average G1 user won't be able dig into system settings and make it possible to install apps on the SD cards, change the location of the internet browser cache, etc.

On the flip side, seeing the sort of private/personal data that a hacker can gain access to via this security vulnerability, it leaves thousands of G1 users open to the possibility of having personal information on their devices compromised by unethical hackers.

I certainly don't want that, and if I had to choose between the two, I'd rather give up some degree of tweakability for the peace of mind that my G1 is less hackable by 3rd parties over a wireless (Wifi/mobile) network.

This all of course begs the question, we are giving many apps written by "who knows" devs access to various aspects of the device...I am sure soon enough we will have a serious breach, by some app called "Naked Video of starlet of the moment" or "Free Starbucks" etc.

I do worry when I have all these fun apps that ask/need access to all angles of the device and we "knowingly" agree.

Scary.

That's why I read what the apps are gaining access too. Always make sure to read the fine print and check the reviews.

I like the idea that I could potentially gain root access to my phone though.

That'd be like installing Linux on a machine and not have true admin access to the box. (That'd be like installing OS X! I kid, I kid... And yes, I know root is accessible in OS X, so please don't give me any crap, fanboys.)

And don't be "first!"
I second that motion.

i woke up at 5:30am and the second i turned it on the update was waiting for me, which was great cuz i had to manually update to R29 last week.

Tate, I just updated mine via SD card. 4MB download, and it deleted some files and copied some new ones over. No enhancements as far as i can see.
