Root updated safe to remove/freeze list available

Ok, I just finished spending 4 hours updating my (not) safe to remove list for the LG Spectrum. hoping someone will find it useful after the time I've spent on it. I do intend on adding non-apk removal information to the page sooner or later... considering how long it took me to update the page, I doubt it will happen any time soon though.. :)

If you find any errors, typos, or plain wrong info, let me know, here or there. I know there are more apks not listed, but most of those are things you really don't want to be nuking off your phone anyway (like dialer.apk...). Not everything on the list is safe to remove, and they are noted as such. I learned the hard way on most of the ones not so safe.

Please understand visiting my website requires you to understand I have an odd sense of humor.

Nice work man!I think others will find this very helpful. Are you going to host downloads for the apk files for the bloat if people delete something and them want to reinstall for whatever reason?

Nice update!

That wiper app is a pos, Imo. It's basically a task killer, but android, by design, automatically kills old tasks to free up memory. I froze it.

The mobile Hotspot app is a self starter, even after I froze it, which is annoying. I'll probably just remove it after I back it up.

You can also freeze 'System Update', but I wouldn't remove it. It's a 3rd party diagnostic tool for verizon if you have issues with your phone. Most likely, it's for call center reps to access while you're in the phone, troubleshooting.

Did you remove the hotspot app? Also did yin freeze or remove wiper?

For now, I've just frozen everything. What's interesting is how the Hotspot app frozen still runs. It's the first app I've seen overpower a root command to freeze.

I have Google+, Google Books, and Google Video ignore the fact that they are frozen after I reboot. As long as I don't reboot, they stay frozen though.

Is it best to just freeze things? I keep uninstalling things and having to push the .cab file again. I think it's because I'm uninstalling Hot Pursuit and Let's Golf 2, I hate seeing those lmao. But anyway, should I leave those two alone and stick to freezing/uninstalling what's on the list?

Yes, especially lg apps. LG apps are usually written into the framework, so removing them can affect performance. And in reality, you gain little by removing 60-100mb in system apps. Just freeze them and never worry about them again. :)

I still cant figure out what I froze that caused the security error message, but wish i did for future reference. Thanks to Neph for the .cab instructions! Disabling the apps works just as well it seems like, with the only catch being that you can't disable all of the bloat...probably to prevent the security error lol.

Alright thanks, but what about those two games the phone comes with? I wanna get rid of those because they just annoy me haha

I disabled as many as I could from the app manager, plus a few more of the widgets using TB, and then left the rest alone. Figured with all the problems people are having there was probably a reason certain ones couldn't be disabled and it was better to just leave them;)

Oh yeah, those games can be removed. So can all the verizon apps, except I'd leave the remote diagnostics app... It's probably woven into the rom.

Noticed two more bad to remove apps, music 2.0 is the notification and ringtone selection app (music 3.0 is the music player app)

And mobile care extensions (already knew about this one, but had an interesting experience freezing it on ICS), freezing this app disabled 3g and 4g, the phone did not even list them as available under settings-network.

Question: Have you investigated Settings>Apps>All Apps and clicking on an app and using the "disable" button? Is that a new ICS feature that I didn't know about?

I haven't, but from a couple of other threads here, it looks like freeze, but LG and Verizon can set an app to "not allow" you to disable it...

Yeah, I noticed. I was just goofing off with it. It does seem like the heavy hitters can be disabled though. Step in the right direction?

just rooted my lg spectrum with the ics update. im having boot issues when I use tb to convert need for speed to a user app instead of a system. im guessing they don't want you to do that. should I just uninstall using tb? thanks for reading.

Yes, that one is safe to uninstall or freeze. Or you could just flash one of the ROMs available here in the Spectrum forum and those bloatwares won't be included.

I should uninstall it as a system app? I have it frozen right now and no problems so far. Thanks for the quick response.:smokingsomb:

As long as you are on stock ROM, I would just freeze it. If/When you flash a custom ROM ( i.e. CM, AOKP, PacMan, Elemental X, Icy Fusion) NFS and other rerely used bloatware (NFL, Golf, VZ Navigator, etc) won't be there at all.

BTW, you're quite welcome and also... welcome to the AF Spectrum forum

Just thought this might help in your decision:
To quote the list of acceptable apps to uninstall located Here (and at the beginning of this thread),

"NFSHP.apk
Removing this apk prevents you from playing a demo of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, I think, I have this suspicion that I vaguely recall launching NFS on my Spectrum, when I first bought it, did nothing, except prompt me to download the app
