Updates for apps

When apps update, do they overwrite old data, or just add it?
(I can have unlimited duplicates in windows just by adding a number or letter after each duplicate)
I just got the Nexus 4, rooted it, and transferred all the apps I had on the Nexus S using Titanium Backup.

These apps use a whole lot less storage on the 4! The S showed 14+G in storage, and the 4, with the same apps is showing 8+G.

Do we have a situation where the GPS is writing location to storage causing this problem like on Acer Tablets? (discussed in Acer 500 forum here)

I don't have social apps, disabled most of Google services, like maps, location, Gmail (I use Aquamail and IMAP). Same on both phones.

Nothing is on automatic update as I have had a few apps update where the update was no improvement.

Yes app updates overwrite previous apps unless the original was preinstalled on the system partition. Then the original is inhibited & the update sits on the data partition. This will result in a loss of space.

Usually updates get bigger as apps are improved but not always.

There are a couple of reasons you might have less internal space. Firstly the system will probably be larger resulting in a smaller data partition. Secondly apps for recent ROMs are often bigger than their equivalent on older ROMs. For instance maps on my gingerbread desire was about 20 mb where as on my jellybean HOX+ its closer to 60 mb
