Help Updating 2.1 to 2.3

Hello. I've looked around the boards here for a bit, but I can't seem to find anything that could help me, or maybe I'm just overlooking it.

I'm on at&t (TX, U.S.) and I just found out that SE released a real version of 2.3. I'm on a Rogers ( I think) version of 2.1 from January or February.

My question is, how would I update from the version that I have to the American version of 2.3 that's compatible with my phone (x10a)? Would it effect the update since I'm technically on a wrong 2.1 for the American version?

If someone even wanted to go above and beyond and give me some steps to do, that would be fantastic! :D

Also, since I'll eventually have 2.3, a rooting scheme would be nice too.

I love the phone, and I hear it's even better on 2.3. Can't wait!

Any firmware for an X10i would work on an X10a, and vice versa.

All I think you need to do is download and install PC Companion, connect your phone and it should be able to update it to 2.3 for you. Then after making that update you can root it following this tutorial
 
I'm on at&t in Chicago and I want to update from 2.1 to 2.3, but SE keeps on telling me I have the latest version. Any suggestions?

Only way to you is to flash the phone. AT&T refused to release 2.3 to their customers:

All you need to do is backup what is currently on the phone (contacts).... download the flash tool.... then download the stock x10a ROM

Open Flashtool...chose the x10a ROM, then click OK. It will want you to turn off your phone...and then remove battery....plug in USB to PC and phone...hold back button and slip battery in.

It will flash to 2.3....done
 
So I followed the steps and I keep getting these messages when I plug the usb into the phone:


28/017/2011 10:17:22 - ERROR - Please install or reinstall device drivers from drivers folder
28/017/2011 10:17:23 - INFO - Searching Xperia....


Any suggestions?

Make sure you are running Windows.

Try a different USB port.

Make sure you are using the USB cable that came with the phone.

Make sure you are logged into Windows using an Administrator account.

If problem persists, and if you have the ability, try another computer.

Should work.

Make sure you have plugged in the phone into your computer before. Mount the drive at least once before going through these steps.

Make sure when you plug in the phone it doesn't automount the SDCard or do anything automatically.
 
i am going to update my 2.1 to 2.3 but i have some questions, hope that you can help me out. im currently on rooted 2.1 with link2sd, if i would like to update to 2.3, do i need to unroot it? and for the apps that i have link to sd, do i need to unlink all of them before i do the backup(using Titanium Backup)? how i want to re-link the link2sd app to my partition sd after i update to rooted 2.3? your help will be much appreciated! Thank you! ;)

Think of 2.3 as a fresh install. When you install it, you start from a formated SDCard, no contacts...

Apps in 2.3 might differ from the app in 2.1....most of the time no...but

So I guess Titanium Backup I guess.
 
Thanks beau420! I tried using a different pc and it worked! Running 2.3 now! I don't think I finished all of the steps though. I think I still need to root it? I kind of stopped after it rebooted with 2.3. So far, so good. I had been hoping to restore all my data from a back up, but that doesn't seem possible. So yes, it is like having a new phone.
