updating apps

When I update an app, a little icon appears in the notification area. It appears that I need to visit an app each time it's updated. Often it's to click on a simple button "ok" or "confirm" or something like that. I can understand doing that the first time I install an app, but every time it's updated?

I find this quite annoying.

Is there some way at least not to have those update icons appear in the message bar? Or is there some way to auto-confirm an app that's being updated?

I have about a dozen apps installed, it seems each time I pick up my phone, one or two of them needs updating. Is there something that will just auto-update the phone?

Ok, I see! To auto-update an app, you actually have to click on the app in the market and then scrolll down a little and there indeed is a check box for auto-update.

There is also, in the settings, a "notify me about updates" and "do not notify me". It's ambiguous to me whether that means "don't notify me if there's an update, I'll check manually", or if that means "just update without notifying me". I gather it's the former.
