Updating OS

dekiblue

Lurker
I'm doing a research to find out which Android phone to get.

One of the things that I can't figure out is how do you update your Android phone OS to a new version? More important, does it depend on the brand of the phone you have? I read somewhere that Motorola is really slow with updates. Does that mean that if I get Motorola I will depend on them for any future updates? How about HTC, Samsung and LG, do they let you update your phones at will? If I root the phone does that imply that I'm putting the latest OS version or it just gives me root access?

Thanks for your help,

DekiBlue

If your carrier and/or manufacturer doesn't release it for your phone.only way is to install a custom rom. Alot a phones seems like it doesn't get the update.

Greetings dekiblue,

Officially, OS updates are usually pushed to your phone OTA (Over The Air) by your carrier. It does also depend on your Phones manufacturer as well. Motorola and HTC are usually faster than Samsung and LG, about pushing updates. Pure google phones like the Nexus series are updated the quickest.

As far as rooting goes, having root just means you have access to all of your phone. Custom roms tend to have the latest OS version in them, and they are usually better than the default OS versions.

You should do a bit of research before you purchase a phone. Questions like memory size, CPU speed and make, and manufacturer are relevant when choosing a phone.
Some manufactures make it hard to put custom roms on their phones.

Welcome to Android!

Thank you for your detailed reply.

I have to find a phone that can be updated without waiting for my carrier as here in Santo Domingo Android is still no show.

Which manufacturer you think makes the phones that are easy to update and root?

Cheers

From what I've seen I suspect this to be a "grass is greener" matter. Everyone seems to complain that their OEM is slow with updates, expecting updates to be available as soon as the new release hits AOSP.

And everyone always seems to forget about SE. Poor bastards.
