Help Updating Problem

For the past few hours, I've been trying to update my mum's Sony Ericsson Arc from Android version 2.3.4. On Sony's website, it says that it has an update to Android 4.0, but when I plug it in and PC companion pops up, it says that it's up to date. I called up my uncle, who suggested to use the 'repair phone' option. It starts out well, until I get to the last step for connecting the phone.

Press and hold the back key on the phone while connecting the USB cable into the phone.

At this point, I'm not sure what's supposed to happen, but whatever it is, it's not happening. Sometimes it will start an offline charge, but most of the time just a small green LED light comes on above the port, but other than that, nothing. If I turn the phone on, it will display the next set of instructions, and then immediately switch back to the previous instructions.
I've left the phone off for 15-20 minutes, took the battery out, and then stumbled upon the Update Service. Looks promising.
I downloaded that, and everything went well up to connecting the phone. The same thing happened. Held the back button, plugged the cable in, and nothing happened. Held the back button for five minutes, still nothing happened. Just that little green light.

Does anyone know how to get this to work? It's ridiculously frustrating, and nothing I've seen in other threads are working (I haven't tried rooting the phone, and it's not an option seeing as it's not my phone, and I'm horrified I'll end up turning the phone into a brick), and nothing that I can think of will work.

Try booting the PC into safe mode mode with networking (hit F8 during the booting of the PC) then try running the update again.
