Newbie
guyz im from Sri lanka.. i have the international model - gt-i9000.. im now on the 2.3.5 firmware verison and my build number is GINGERBREAD.XXKI4..and it is Rooted...
some days back my phone asked me to update it to the new firm.. i just cancelled it.. now i need to update it to the ICS via Kies .. and is it the standard way ? and can i know the pros and cons of ICS.. is it necessary to update the phone to ICS ?... if im updating via kies do i need to backup everything ? or just update it without doing anything to my files or contacts? will it be the same after the new update ?

Thanks in advance

Hmm the gt-i9000 is the original SGS but yes through Kies is the standard way to update to ICS.

It's certainly not necessary and if you are happy with your phone at the moment you might want to wait till they iron out a few of the bugs, though no idea how long that would take.

You should do a backup via clockworkmanager, then if you dont like the new one you can restore back to what you have now

I have the GT-I9100, bought unlocked/unbranded in the UK, running on Vodafone UK. It has Android 2.3.4, the build number is GINGERBREAD.XWKI4, and it is rooted. Kies says it has the latest firmware. How do I get the official ICS update on?

You have to wait for Vodophone to release their version to you. I heard this is next month some time. You can always update manually via ODIN, your choice...

I have to wait for Vodafone? Boo. It's unbranded, the only Vodafone UK part of it is the sim card. Let me put it this way; the bloatware is Samsung stuff, not Vodafone stuff :)

I might go with Odin if Kies/OTA doesn't have the update soon. I've used Odin before and never had problems, but I always feel slightly out of my depth and afraid that things could go horribly wrong at any moment. I think it's the massive number of XWKI4 type options which scares me as much as anything, I'm never 100% sure which I should be using.
