Help Updating to Android 6.0

Hi all. I purchased an android phone for my nephew for Christmas. Currently it's running Android 5.1 with a custom OS. However he wants to use an app that is only supported by Android 6.0 or above.

Is there a way I can install a clean version of 6.0 to his phone (I'm happy to have the standard OS don't need the custom one) without having the phone rooted as this then makes the game not work. Just the bog stock Android 6.0 will be fine.

I'm fairly clued up with computers but phones are new to me. Thanks in advance for the help.

Upgrading your phone to higher OS version by yourself would make the phone's warranty invalid.

Are you sure you want to do it?

The Android to be installed also needs to be specifically designed for that device. There is no such thing as stock Android installer that would work for all devices because there won't be any drivers for the specific hardware configuration.

Hence if the device you bought isn't mainstream (Nexus, HTC, Samsung, LG, a few others), existence if a Marshmallow ROM for it is unlikely.
