Upgrade from eris

Am About to upgrade from the eris. The worst problem I have with the eris is keyboard related. I can be typing away and the phone decides I should have a number where I want a letter to be. Then other times the keyboard is just slow. I'm running a custom rom that helps but there are still problems.

Are there any of these problems with the revolution?

Any problems I should look for?

I use Swype and it seems to run just fine, in Rev you need to shift screens to access the other characters such as numbers (at least that is the way I know how to do it).

The Gingerbread update is getting into Rev and so many users are still finding things about it. As far as I can tell turning off automatic updates has been removed. I use my phone for PC Internet data, I have found the hotspot and the tether to be a bit touchy (connects but there is no data), if I restart the phone and computer the problems goes away.

Battery life does appear to have improved with GB, I have been able to turn off Juice defender which really made a difference for the previous version.

I live in a rural area, the 1X tower shows in the first second but the 3G tower can take over a minute to show up.

There appears to be a bug in GB, a case where the key lights won't come on, I have observed it to occur during a background service is running such as email or an update.

Hope this is what you are looking for, in summary I am happy with my REV, a lot of bag for the bucks.

I pretty much agree with what Steve said. I bought my Revo on release day and have been generally very pleased. I tried JuiceDefender too and removed it before GingerBread appeared as I had a problem with the radios not always waking up on incoming calls/data. Hasn't been a problem since GB and battery life is much better for me. (I have an extended battery but no longer use it.)

I use GO Keyboard which I prefer to Swype and it works fine. (I also use several of the other GO apps like GO Launcher EX, GO Contacts and Dialer and GO SMS Pro. These are all very customizable and competent FREE apps that also work fine under GB.)

I use the wireless hotspot feature and haven't had any problem with it under GB.

I noticed the same soft key light issue Steve did.

I live in an area with 3G service and commute to work in an area with 4G and the phone handles the transition and hand-off without issue.

The new LG Optimus LTE that was released in Korea and is now slated for sale in Canada as the Eye or whatever they've settled on interests me greatly. With an HD screen, dual core processor and 1gb of RAM, I'll be watching to see if it shows up at Verizon in some form. (I read that AT&T was getting a version of it, but that's not near enough to get me to change to AT&T.) I read that Verizon is getting an LG model called the Spectrum, but there hasn't been any information on it and it may be some other mid-tier model. Have to wait and see. - MarkC

thanks guys, we just got our son the revo to replace his dying eris. i know there are newer phones out there right now, but this seems to be a really solid little device and he is extremely pleased. it's a huge step up from the eris, which he still had running on 1.5.

Found out what the data download issue was with the hotspot. It turns out it was a network level issue. VZ is taking up to ten minutes to agree that I am a valid hotspot user.

My bill just arrived so it is time to get VZ to pony back a few bucks to cover their problem.

Nope you should be good. Although if you are just upgrading now... there are better phones to choose from, with the razr, rezound, and nexus (coming this month).

if you are looking for a phone that has a ton of development and ROMs like the eris did... the Revo is generally not for you as there is only basic development for it and one or two ROMs.
