Upgrade my Nexus? If so, to what?

I have the CDMA Nexus running on Sprint. First, let me say that I am not switching providers, so that's not a question that's on the table.

I like/love my Nexus for all the reasons any of you can imagine. It's reliable, and, easy to Root and ROM. If I get bored, I can change it, and if I blow it up, I can fix it. Currently, I'm using Cyanogenmod 10.3.1, which I like a lot, mostly because I did a very easy, "dirty install" over MmuzzyROM and have had NO problems, other than some lag, which seems to be the case with everything at this point in my phone's life.

I am eligible for an upgrade but I am torn. There are a lot of good phones out there, BUT, as good as they are, I am already running a dual core device running Android 4.2.2 Anything I jump to is going to be a shiny, new, (in terms of actually utilization) slightly faster version of exactly what I already have, isn't it?

I like having a nice toy, but I am not a gamer, and I don't stream a lot of video. In terms of the performance jump you see for everyday calling, texting, email, and some web browsing, is anything out there REALLY worth the $199 or more investment and the 2 year commitment right now? Or am I better off sitting on my Nexus until something comes out that makes it look like a flip phone?

Plus, any Sprint users out there with more up to date phones that can tell me if there is any network improvement stepping up to something new?

Thanks!

Given you like Nexus phones, I'd hang on as the Nexus 5 is likely to announced very soon - possibly as early as this week or next :D

Nexus 5 fcc documents show compatibility with Sprint's network. Might want to see if they offer it.

For what it's worth, if the N5 doesn't tickle you in all the right spots, try to get your hands on a G2 to play with. I did the same thing coming from Verizon, and was the same way. Nothing had really caught my eye as being THAT big an upgrade to justify a new phone. But shopping for a new one for my GF, I started checking reviews on the G2, and ended up with one myself. It's a HUGE jump up, believe it or not. The speed on the device is very impressive, but that's second to the battery life which is outstanding. Even though it's not a "pure" Android phone, it's only a matter of time before we have more and more ROMs for it. I loaded up CleanROM to clear some of the bloat off I didn't want, and a new launcher, and I'm loving the phone. Has yet to give me any sign of trouble. I strongly recommend it even as just a "well let me at least look at it and see how I like it" option. And from what I'm reading lately, the N5 will actually be lower specs, but pure OS. Guess it's a trade-off to some people, but I'm not regretting my choice at all.

I'll do as suggested. I liked the review of the G2. even the volume and power on the back appeal to me, even though the reviewer didn't like it. I would also like to see the Nexus5 and, if Sprint is slated to get it (Im surprised) that would be nice to check out. I understand the specs will be lower, but so are the Moto X, which is proving that reliable, well balanced specs can be as fast or faster, and more reliable, than raw fire power.

But, it's nice to know that there really is a noticeable enough jump to worth considering. Plus, with the holidays almost upon us, there will be deals to be had.

THanks!

The Nexus 5 looks like it will have the same Snapdragon 800 processor/Adreno 330 GPU. It does look to be smaller at 4.96" instead of 5.2" and have a 2300mAh battery instead of 3000mAh that the G2 has.

I'm actually considering the Moto X. BuT will wait for Sprint to get Moto Maker and come down in price. It could happen. The Galaxy SIII is down to $49. That's what I paid a year ago Christmas time when I bought it for my sad. Then it shot back up to $150-$199 for quite a while. So, maybe other phones will follow the same pattern?

Two main reasons to go with a G2. :)
The overall footprint isn't too much bigger than my S3 and the battery life is insane. I hope all the best that there's some optimization with the Nexus 5 in terms of battery management, but 2300mAh is just too small IMO.

I'll be getting it an will let you know how long it does actually last. Assuming Google actually releases it :p
